Anger in Children - checklist

How many of these behaviors describe your child?
My child is unable to explain how she is feeling when she?s upset
My child has frequent angry outbursts, even over minor issues
My child has trouble calming down when he is frustrated or angry
My child turns her anger into a tantrum (i.e. shouting, kicking, swearing spitting)
My child doesn?t seem to care about other people?s needs or feelings
My child frequently blames others and doesn?t accept responsibility for his actions
My child has difficulty handling change
My child frequently fights or hits others
My child acts without thinking and many times behaves recklessly
My child is often sullen, silent and holds her feelings in
My child verbalizes, writes about or draws pictures of violent or aggressive acts

There's no magic number of items on this quiz that confirms "all is well" or "there's a problem" Instead, it's more important to use items to help you tune into how your child handles frustrations.

Checking just one of these items may be a warning sign that your child needs help dealing with anger. If you are unsure of how frequently the behaviors are occurring, consider tracking the incidents on a chart, a calendar or in a journal. You may discover that your child is having a more difficult time coping at a particular time such as right before bed, before a test or even when he's hungry.

Most importantly, it'll help you tune into what may be triggering your child's concerns -- which is always the first step to turning things around. Remember, anger is normal?but when you see an ongoing trend, when it starts crippling your child's relationships in your family or others, or when you notice sudden behavior changes that aren't due to illness or medication use your instincts and get help
